Behavioral Health Counselor Job Summary

Provide individual, family, and group counseling services to children and adolescents using a trauma informed approach that maximizes this individual’s resiliency and associated skills. Coordination of services with referring agencies for continuity of care is an essential part of this job. This position requires an individual to carry their own caseload, work within a team environment and practice recovery principles. 

Essential Functions

  •  Conduct and document individual initial and ongoing assessments.
  •  Develop individualized treatment plans with client, clinical team, and identified stake holders.
  •  Plan, organize and conduct therapy, social, recreation and/or support groups as assigned by supervisors.
  •  Conduct individual and family treatment sessions, as appropriate to client treatment plans.
  •  Provide emergency face to face counseling and/or crisis intervention as needed to avert or in response to client relapse.
  •  Develop and maintain effective working relationships with community agencies, case managers and clinical teams.
  •  Participate in clinical staffings and individual service planning sessions with case managers, treatment staff, family members and other stake holders to identify and meet clients’ treatment needs.
  •  Assist clients in identifying and pursuing effective treatment goals.
  •  Identify the types and amounts of support clients require to remain independent.
  •  Maintain information on community resources for clients’ assistance and support.
  •  Provide education, assistance and support to family members and others involved with the client to enhance awareness of mental and emotional illness and to increase their ability to contribute to the rehabilitation process.
  •  Maintain consumer records, treatment statistics and other documentation according to agency standards.
  •  Participate in oversight of the health, safety and welfare of clients in the treatment programs.
  •  Provide back up to other counseling staff as needed and/or as assigned.
  •  Maintain independent licensure with state of Arizona and provide PSA with copy of license.
  •  Other duties as negotiated.

 Qualification Requirements


  • Current Arizona State License in Social Work, Counseling, Marriage and Family, and/or Substance Abuse preferred.
  •  Master’s Degree in Social Work, Counseling, Psychology or a related human service field.
  •  Counseling experience with youth and adolescents who experience substance abuse, co-occurring, trauma, and medical/mental health issues.
  • Bilingual preferred but not required.
  • Current and valid certification in first aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation and valid driver’s license. 

Knowledge of:

  •  Behavioral health assessment and rehabilitation.
  •  Understanding of the recovery principles and importance of peer involvement.
  •  Principles and methods of psychosocial rehabilitation.
  •  Special needs and characteristics of the client population.
  •  Counseling principles and methods.
  •  Motivational Interviewing.
  •  Methods used to prevent violent behavior or behavior harmful to the client or others.
  •  How to provide behavior management in crisis situations.
  •  Indications, common side effects, reactions and interactions of medications commonly used by the client population. 
  •  Where to access resources for assistance.
  •  How to document client activities and progress according to accepted professional and agency standards.
  •  How to work with clients that have multiple challenges (mental health, substance abuse, poverty, medical issues, trauma, and criminal behavior. 


  •  Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  •  Group process and group facilitation.
  •  Practicing recovery principles in all facets of the counseling process.
  •  Outreach and engagement with hard to engage clients or disengaged clients.
  •  Provision of recreational and social activities, life skills training and/or milieu activities.
  •  Ability to develop and implement treatment plans within the framework of a clinical team.
  •  Able to develop groups that will address skill deficits through specific content and focus.
  •  Can promote client responsibility, mastery and to recognize symptom exacerbation.
  •  Creative, energetic, flexible and to serve as a healthy role model for clients.
  • Ability to provide behavior management and activity supervision 

Physical Requirements


Must be able to push and pull file cabinet/desk drawers open and closed daily

Body Positions/Movements:

Must be able to retrieve items/supplies on overhead shelves and bend/stoop to reach files, supplies and items located in bottom cabinets. Occasionally drives to and from consumers’ homes.

Hand Use/Sense:

Manual dexterity sufficient to use calculator, telephone, keyboard and various office machines on a daily basis and be able to write. Must be able to communicate both in person and on the telephone, enter information on the computer and read various instructions. Be able to read numbers, reports, and computer terminals.

Mental Requirements

Must be able to analyze many variables and choose the most effective course of action. Personal maturity is an important attribute. Must be able to resolve problems, handle conflict and make effective decisions under pressure. Ability to give, receive, and analyze information, prepare written materials, and articulate goals and action plans. Ability to do simple math calculations, input data into the computer, and analyze data as requested.

Equipment to Be Used

Must be able to operate computer (word, excel, outlook) and other office machines such as fax, calculator, telephone, copy machine, and so on.

Working Conditions

Usually works in a typical office setting. Some time is spent at consumers’ homes in providing in-home counseling.
